Elementary School Guest Teacher

Explaining ocean sciences to kindergarten and first-grade students is fun!

As part of the "Communicating Ocean Sciences" graduate course at UW, Nick Ward taught weekly oceanography lessons in a Kindergarten/First grade classroom at Montlake Elementary School in Seattle, WA. The unit consisted of five 1-hour sessions utilizing the Marine Activities, Resources & Education (MARE) curriculum, and one self-designed lesson. Lessons explored topics such as adaptations of organisms to different environments (i.e. rocky seashore, sandy seashore, and kelp forest), properties of water (i.e. buoyancy, density, surface tension, and volume), properties of rocks and sand, and conservation issues. This was the first formal science unit for many of these students. Student assessment before and after the unit showed a large increase in scientific comprehension and curiosity in the majority of students.
