Pre-LBA Official Data Sets

Data Sets for the LBA study area in Rondonia are being compiled. The LBA homepage already has a number of snapshots of land surface properties (eg, veg, soils), which were published recently:

Calvet, J. C., R. Santos-Alvala, J. Genevieve, C. Delire, C. Nobre, I. Wright and J. Noilhan. 1997. Mapping surface parameters for mesoscale modeling in forested and deforested Southwestern Amazonia. Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society 78(3): 413-423.
Abstract: Surface parameter digital maps of vegetation, soil, and relief are obtained over Rondonia, Brazil, covering the 5° x 5° region 8°-13° S, 65°-60° W. Numerical maps of the natural landscape structure have been achieved by digitizing existing 1:1 000 000 paper maps. Satellite data give information about the most recent modifications of the surface due to human activities. This mapping work is the first step of a mesoscale meteorological modeling program.

The land cover classification presented there may be of particular interest. It is based on a classification of Landsat TM images; no date is given.

TM Images for LBA/Rondonia area (path/row, date)

The arrangement of these images below matches their relative geographical location. Rio Madeira is on the left (West), and the confluence of the Rios Beni and Mamore to form the Madeira can be seen in the SW corner. Porto Velho is on the NE image, together with the confluence of the Ji-Parana with the Madeira downstream of Porto Velho. The Serras dos Pacaas Novos can be seen on the South.

These TM scenes are available from the US Remote Sensing Lab. I (Emilio) have acquired the 2 on the right, [232/066, 6/19/88] and [232/067, 6/22/92], and put them on our own system.

A map of Rondonia with overlaid TM scene Path/Row coverage is shown below, taken from the NASA Landsat Pathfinder Project Homepage (New Hampshire), Amazon Browser.
